Obsessions: Joe Dallesandro as Joe in “Flesh” (1968), “Trash” (1970) & “Heat” (1972)

Warhol superstar and bisexual icon Joe Dallesandro completed changed the way we see male sexuality on screen. I can watch him for hours sitting stoned out of his fucking mind and dreamily dazing into space and never get bored for a second. He’s endlessly fascinating, especially in these films. Although he is playing supposedly “deadbeat “character types such as hustlers and junkies and has open, “I’ll try anything and anyone once” sexuality, there’s always something curious, mysterious, tragic and unattainable about him.

A taste of the characters and world of my upcoming major film project CHERRY:

A child-like, mentally unstable boy (Jasper Marlow) becomes dangerously obsessed with a hedonistic performance/video artist (Georgina Lloyd) and alienates his cynical girlfriend (Jaime Lewis) as he loses his mind and falls in with the artist’s gang of oversexed, violent cult-like followers (Lily Matchett, Taylor Litton-Strain & Mitch Farkas).

If you’re interested in helping out in the production (especially in a producer role/organisation/sound/lighting/technic al areas but also in terms of knowing actors/models/people who share my aesthetic or even just helping spread word of mouth/marketing ideas) please comment or email me at wickedmiranda@gmail.com

THE FINAL IDEA

“CHERRY”

Main themes: obsession, self-destruction, hedonism, violent overwhelming desire, lost innocence, consumption, pleasure, binge, purge

“The males like death – it excites him sexually and, already dead inside, he wants to die.” – Valerie Solanas

The film opens with a child-like, mentally unstable (BOY) sitting with his cynical, chain-smoking art school (GIRLFRIEND), who is increasingly getting frustrated with his immaturity and oddness. There is an obvious disconnection between the two but they share an attraction and a longing to work it all out. (Girlfriend) is constantly smoking and chewing on little snacks and (Boy) is guzzling down booze and also eating to distract from the awkwardness of the situation. Their attempts to succumb to their desires despite their jarring differences are interrupted by (Boy)’s sleazy chain-smoking (FRIEND) who comes baring gifts – a couple of discs of obscure underground art/trash/porn films that him and (Boy) regularly trade. They put on one of the discs and watch a striking and mysterious (WOMAN) gorging on sweets and cherries and taking part in acts of grotesque, shameless exhibitionism  that is borderline violent and pornographic. (Girlfriend) criticizes the film as repulsive but (Boy) is clearly drawn to the woman. (Friend) explains that she is a performance artist/filmmaker who mysteriously disappeared and her films have developed a rabid cult following. (Boy) is becoming increasingly obsessed with the woman and begins watching the films over and over again, she provides a reliability and a brutal honesty about herself that he feels his girlfriend can not.

A few weeks later, (Boy) and (Girlfriend) go to a friend’s party at a dingy art space, a faux-posh event filled with pretentious, empty hipsters all going on and on about their art projects/bands etc. While there, (Boy) and (Girlfriend) are separated in the crowd and (Boy) is accosted by a (DRUGGED OUT CRAZY GIRL) who cryptically warns him of his eventual fate in between vulgar rants of sex and drug-taking. In his search for his girlfriend, (Boy) stumbles across (the Mysterious Woman) from his films. He tries to tell her of his obsession but she disappears into the shadows.

After more searching and other strange prophetic visions (including an ghostly HARLEQUIN), a performance begins to Little Peggy March’s “I Will Follow Him” in the corner of the party. (Boy) moves through the crowd and is thrilled to discover that the (Mysterious Woman) from his films is the entertainment there, doing a hypnotic cabaret/musical/burlesque/Bettie Page-inspired routine with a group of druggy bisexual cult-like (FOLLOWERS) – all acting cute and kitschy while violently gorging a banquet of cakes, tarts and sugary textures and smearing it all over themselves. They bring a young man up on stage from the audience, tear off his shirt, brutally torturing and eventually eating him alive in front of the drugged out hipster crowd. This starts a huge riot with the audience who flee screaming as the group of libertines start to attack them but (Boy) is turned on and enthralled by the sadistic display.

The dingy art space is now deserted with only (Boy) and (Woman) left standing, along with her followers who circle him hungry and excitedly like wild animals, covered in blood and sugar. Suddenly (Girlfriend) returns, wondering where the hell (Boy) as been all this time and what is going on. (Boy) takes off his shirt and immediately acts affectionate towards her (the first time in the film that their relationship looks healthy) but as she succumbs to his whims, he then slaughters her in front of the group, blood dripping down his chin and chest like a savage beast.

With the “common sense” character killed the film then completely descends into chaos and away from reality. The murder of (Girlfriend) serves as (Boy)’s initiation into the group leading to a surreal, self-destructive night of debauchery and decadence, which only serves to aggravate his fragile mental state.
