Given that we are invariably marked on what we post on this blog. It is now necessary for me to write a self-indulgent piece about the stuff I have been working on, with the intention of hopefully completing it by the end of the year.

I shall start with Fierce, which is going to be presented in the format of a bible and a script for the pilot episode. However, I am planning to shoot a couple of youtube tasters of the series to introduce the characters and hopefully leave any people who enjoyed their viewing experience wanting more. Below is an introduction into two of the characters and will hopefully give you a little bit of a taste as to what sort of a direction I’m heading in. Note that any feedback in the form of constructive comments is welcomed with open arms.

The next thing that I am planning to have completed come mid to late October is a film clip to the beautiful track ‘glasgow’ by The Large Hadron Collective. It is going to be an animation set on the moon and below is a sneak preview image of at least what the design of the landscape is going to look like. As you can see, it is quite moon-like.

Lewis Johns

One of the most beneficial things I have got out of my year studying at AFTRS so far has been the diversity of the student group. With everyone rapidly planning and in some cases already shooting their final projects. It has been fascinating to see what each person has decided to do. One student who is definitely not of the norm is Lewis Johns. Lewis has a strong passion for art direction and fashion. He is very talented at creating at atmosphere in his photo shoots that results in his final product always proving to be very compelling in a number of ways. You can see this at his blog here and an editorial he directed for artefact magazine here (check page 12).

So when we were discussing his idea. I thought it would be great to capture “the making of ” the project. This is part one involving the high profile models of Sophie Lowe (beautiful kate), Rhys Wakefield (black balloon) and two models who Lewis sees as up and comers. kianan and Adam. Enjoy the result . . .

Shane Mauss

Shane Mauss is an American comedian from Wisconsin, who has appeared on Conan three times, and I was lucky enough to have the privilege of seeing his show at the comedy store in the Entertainment Quarter last night. He was supported by a few Australian acts who were really good as well. Most notably Rodney Todd had a hilarious set.

However, no-one was to top the brilliance of Shane Mauss. Despite having very different material, he had the relaxed stage presence that seemed similar to the videos of revolutionary comic Bill Hicks.

It was his first show in Australia and he seemed to be testing the audience with a range of material and spent over an hour on stage. At the end of it I was really disappointed that the show had to end. He seemed to stand up there drinking beers just hanging out, entertaining the audience in the intimate surrounds of the comedy store. which, by the way, made me think of Seinfeld’s comedy club as soon as I walked in. He is playing there for the next 2 weeks and I would thoroughly recommend checking him out if you get the chance. Here is a sample of his work.

Valentino: the last emperor

I managed to pop down to the Sydney film festival last night and catch the documentary made over Valentino’s 45th year as a fashion designer. It was a hilarious film with a compelling narrative that seemed to be unfolding amongst the mayhem of the fascinating world of couture fashion, and it was superb. I can imagine that this film will be distributed commercially once it has done the festival circuit where it seems to be cleaning up awards left, right and centre. Here is the trailer . . enjoy.

Soko

about a month ago when I drove past the Clovelly cemetery I had this brilliant idea to shoot a great acoustic performance there to post on my blog as part of a series of shoots I am planning to do at some stage. Like most ideas these days, I discovered today that it has been done. Not only that, it has been done with Soko, who in this video comes across as the most openly honest and adorable performers I have just about seen. We are Green

We are green pixels is a site thats been setup by a bunch of Irish snowboard enthusiasts. They basically travel around the world going snowboarding, making videos and taking pictures of their time doing so. Their quality of productions are great and the website design, colours and pictures eminate a range of beautiful tones which gives you the sneaking suspicion that these guys absolutely love doing this . . . and why wouldn’t you. here is their latest video.

We Fun

This doco on bands that are coming out of Atlanta looks unreal. It’s refreshing to see a scene stepping back to a raw sound. Almost like Seattle in the early 90’s. Refreshingly, Perth is very much flying the flag with a psych rock scene that is going crazy with the likes of pond, tame impala and the silents. It’d be great if we had film-makers who lived it to the level that these guys have appeared to. I did see the something in the water documentary on ABC2 last week and it just wasn’t rock and roll enough whatsoever.

I can’t wait for this project to get off the ground. It is a collaboration between universal music and youtube specialising in music videos and other musically related video content, you can follow their progress on twitter here. I think it’s really exciting to see two giants collaborating on what will hopefully be an amazing site.

It seems a clever idea with the likes of la blogoteque and VBS creating more and more amazing viral videos of bands and musicians just for the net.
